In 1995, I launched "The Power Project," with the intention of photographing women in moments of power and strength. I worked with 32 "ordinary" women - of different ages and ethnic backgrounds - who chose to be photographed in activities that brought forth their personal power. This type of power looked different on each woman. For one, it was flying a plane. For another, it was mothering a baby. For yet another, it was rappelling up a cliff. These women were featured in my book, My Spirit Flies, as well as in a traveling exhibit. Prior to the photo shoot, I individually guided the participants through a reflective process where they explored their moments of inner power. This often proved difficult at first because the women were usually too close to themselves to be objective. They minimized their strengths; not recognizing them as being significant or important. By giving each woman permission to shift her vision and recognize her authentic power, she recognized a part of herself that had mostly gone unnoticed. This revelation was often transformational. My hope is that people everywhere will look at the photographs in my book, then reflect on their own authentic power and passions. |
